Because You Asked
Vol. I No. 1
Why do they want me to walk all of the time?
It surely seems as though health care providers keep promoting
exercise and walking
as the answer to many medical issues. Indeed, there is a true basis
for our promotion
of such a simple and inexpensive method to assist in your health
maintenance.
First, and foremost is your right (and responsibility) actively
to take part in
your well-being. A walking program that is designed and planned
by you,
empowers you to have control over your situation. We all know that
there
is very little in this life that we have true control over
but this can be one of them.
You can arrange the walk to fit into your personal daily schedule
of activities.
Just as we make time for the other activities in our lives that
are important to us,
so too is it true with exercise. To be incorporated most effectively,
it should be
performed every day, or every other day. Sticking to an exercise
program
requires discipline and a desire to alter your current course.
Secondly, the physiological activities that take place within your
body are real.
The increase in blood flow to all systems delivers more oxygen,
which in turn promotes improved cellular performance. The effect
on your legs is also dramatic, in that the muscle
action releases a chemical called lactic acid that naturally helps
the vessels in the limbs dilate. The distended vessels consequently
deliver more blood and oxygen to nourish the cells;
plus the increased blood supply aids in flushing out the lactic
acid (because this is what
causes the burning sensation - claudication - that you may feel
when you walk).
Thirdly, there are a lot of nice people that you can meet in the
mall when you join
them for a daily walk; or, if you choose to go outside for your
exercise,
there are many beautiful things to see and hear that Mother Nature
provides free of charge.
This final benefit does wonders to help clear a stressed mind, too.
Now that you are aware of all the benefits of a walking program,
please contact your Primary Care Provider for a medical evaluation
before starting such a program (especially if you have a heart condition,
or are a little overweight). Start gradually and work up to a set
goal
remember that Rome was not built in one day!!!
GOOD LUCK!
If you have any other questions regarding your health, please feel
free to write
it down on a 3x5 card and place it in the small box at the receptionists
window.
I will make every effort to answer these queries throughout the
year.
