February is the American Heart Month and Wise Health Consumer Month
February brings with it many national health observances, two of which have particular relevance to our specialty practice: the American Heart Month and Wise Health Consumer Month.

The concept of Wise Health Consumer Month reminds us that there is a wealth of information available to the public. A well informed consumer is better able to understand their disease as well as be able to comprehend the reasons for recommended treatments. We all realize that following a recommended treatment plan will likely hasten the improvement of a problem or delay the deterioration of a problem.

Whether you learn best by reading, listening or doing; there is a method of education available to meet your needs. We live in a communication age that is rapid-paced. Accessibility to the computer and the Internet has opened a virtual floodgate of potential choices for the gathering of health information. A single topic of interest may, in turn, lead you to other areas that were unfamiliar or unknown to you before.

As vascular specialists, we focus on your vascular health and well-being. Entwined within vascular health are cardiac health, diabetes management, cholesterol management, and tobacco abstinence.

Many organizations associated with these disease processes, provide support groups, and local informational lectures. They also have Web sites that provide much of their information and also offer links to associated groups/organizations that may also be of benefit to the information seeker.

The American Heart Association’s Web site is easy to browse and is currently promoting a program called Go Red for Women. The focus of this program is to educate women on heart disease and stroke; the #1 and #3 killers of women. www.americanheart.org.
